Measuring Neutrality of Fitness Landscapes Based on the Nei’s Standard Genetic Distance

چکیده
In recent years, not only ruggedness but also neutrality has been recognized as an important feature of a fitness landscape for genetic search. Since the traditional theories based on the schema theory are not useful for problems including neutrality, new theoretical guidelines should be developed for effective genetic search. This research direction has been introduced almost for ten years, but the progress is not very fast. For instance, only a few methods have been proposed or tested for measuring neutrality on the problem to be solved. In this paper, we propose the use of the Nei’s standard genetic distance, which originates from population genetics, for measuring the neutrality of a landscape. Several computer simulations are conducted by using a standard genetic algorithm in order to investigate the validity of the proposed approach. The terraced NK landscape, which is a popular test function in this field, is adopted for a test function. The results suggest to us that the Nei’s genetic distance in natural evolution is a reliable method for measuring neutrality in artificial evolution after minor modifications.

Estimating the Degree of Neutrality in Fitness Landscapes by the Nei's Standard Genetic Distance - An Application to Evolutionary Robotics -
In recent years, not only ruggedness but also neutrality has been recognized as an important feature of a fitness landscape for genetic search. As it has been reported that the evolutionary dynamics on a fitness landscape with neutrality is clearly different from the canonical explanations, ruggedness alone might be inadequate describing it. Another measure, i.e., neutrality is required. In thi...
متن کاملFrom Royal Road to Epistatic Road for Variable Length Evolution Algorithm
Although there are some real world applications where the use of variable length representation (VLR) in Evolutionary Algorithm is natural and suitable, an academic framework is lacking for such representations. In this work we propose a family of tunable fitness landscapes based on VLR of genotypes. The fitness landscapes we propose possess a tunable degree of both neutrality and epistasis; th...

Elaeagnus angustifolia L. is a Eurasian tree that has become naturalized and has various ecological, medicinal and economical uses. In this study, a combination of morphological traits and RAPD markers were used to study the presence or absence of an association between genetic variation and morphological features among five populations of E. angustifolia collected from the East Azarbaijan of I...
متن کاملRuggedness and Neutrality - The NKp family of Fitness Landscapes
It has come to be almost an article of faith amongst population biologists and GA researchers alike that the principal feature of a fitness landscape as regards evolutionary dynamics is “ruggedness”, particularly as measured by the auto-correlation function. In this paper we demonstrate that auto-correlation alone may be inadequate as a mediator of evolutionary dynamics, specifically in the pre...

Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and neutrality are assumptions shared by all measures of genetic distance and structure computed in the present report. In order to evaluate the impact of ignoring departures from these theoretical models, we calculated Reynolds’ distance, FST, Nei’s D and ancestry coefficients using two sets of markers: all 127 markers passing quality control ( ) and a reduced panel ...
